The list was created off of the Global Liveability Index, which depends on five factors; stability, healthcare, culture, environment and education/infrastructure. In the previous list, we saw a tremendous Canadian presence, with Calgary, Vancouver and Toronto ranking 5th, 6th and 7th in 2019, respectively. However, this year it appears Canada has fallen off the list entirely, with the majority of the cities being made up from cities in Oceania. The overarching difference between the cities that were contenders before and the ones that made the list this year boiled down to the countries which had the best Covid-19 response. The leaders of New Zealand and Australia were quick to deal with the Pandemic and effectively contained the problem, whereas Canada’s delayed response ultimately led to it’s downfall. Hence the list contains the cities which made the best comeback.

This list alternatively depends on eight factors; purchasing power, safety, health care, cost of living, property price to income ratio, traffic commute time, pollution and climate. According to USNews, Canada ranks first place even after the debilitating impact of the Pandemic. However, other sources claim Canada’s ranking has fallen into the middle of other developed nations, sitting at a mere 20th spot. This brings up the question, why with it’s “high quality of life” has Canada become so “Unlivable”? In these countries, education inequality is also an issue, girls are much less likely to be literate, and majority of the government money goes towards education funding for the richer citizens, renewing the cycle of poverty.

Due to the income of Honey, some personal expenses were coming out. But the School has been closed until month of july. Due to work from home, she is getting half salary only 2500/- Rs. and now you tell me how anyone can run his home only with 2500/- Rupees. How he can take care of his children. In the period of covid -19, we are taking all goods on loan from outside to meet the needs of the children and the home. it is just a feeling that life has become borrowed!. we can not put so much burden on our parents. because there are so many types of household expenses. I am thankful to god if our parents do not help us for food. I would probably have to live on the road at this covid -19 time.

2) Q:- What are other people doing for food?

Ans:- if some do not have jobs and work then Some people will be like me who are taking help from their parents, Friends or relatives. The second thing is that they have work. because they mostly do labour jobs, drive rickshaws and other small work . so in slum areas no food problem. even in lockdown period.

4) Q:- Do the kids have any lessons online?

Ans:- Yes, due to covid-19 school has been closed until the next govt order, so school starts online classes for next session. However, we can look back, a little over 100 years ago the Spanish flu entered Calgary by train, coming in with soldiers returning from WW1. The death toll for the Spanish flu was 3300 in Alberta, with majority of deaths coming from First Nation communities1.Compare this to today, April 7th 2021, the death toll of Covid-19 has reached 2002, and an end does not seem clear2. Soon after the Spanish Flu ended, the Great Depression erupted, the fear of another collapse mirroring that of the 1930’s is prevalent. Even 100 years ago, masks were made mandatory, and multiple lockdowns were imposed, oddly we see a similar response today, indicating while other areas of medicine may have grown, our understanding on controlling pandemics remains limited. In this blog I hope to display the impacts pandemics have on the economy and how they effect charitable organizations.

Along with her growing debt, which was impeding her ability to get the education she wanted, her father got into a serious accident recently which required an awfully expensive surgery and futher disadvantaged the struggling family. Priya had fallen into a deep winter and believed that there was no hope for her in terms of one day becoming a physiotherapist. As it would turn out, Dr.Bickert would coincidentally meet her, and she would qualify for a scholarship we offer. Today, she is now a graduate physiotherapist and working in Guru teg Bahadur Charitable Hospitan in the central town of Jalandhar, Punjab. She eexpressed to Dr. Bickert that she would also like to help the poor. Perhaps given sufficient time, she will soon be living her dream, the same one she once had to give up all those years ago. Although the ups and downs always occur and work together to make us what we are. In Priya Danial's case, she might have needed the hardship to be the physiotherapist she became. The ocean is not the ocean without the waves, a rose is not a rose without the many tiny particles moving around, and what is a car if it cannot move at the up and down speed, the crest of summer is not the same without the trough of winter.

As we go through life, we must be aware of the effects we have on each individual ability to reach their full potential. Forced out of school at a young age himself due to political conflict, Nicolau vowed to bring education to those less fortunate. He recalled that during the time he was in school, the situation was so dire that even 17-year-olds were still studying in Grade 1 because they did not have the time or opportunity to attend regularly.

Convincing the local parents and authorities that a school was worthwhile proved to be a challenge—they believed that since girls were meant to get married and men to work, schooling was a pointless use of time. We build educational and medical facilities in areas that do not have access to them so that the families living their can receive the rights to education and health that they deserve, setting themselves up for future success. Since its rise as a global power, many people have assumed that the wealth of the country has boosted the livelihoods of the people living there. Unfortunately, more than 80% of people live on less than $3 per day, and the top 1% own more than half of the country’s wealth. For perspective, 16 people in India are as wealthy as 600 million people—and that means that for many, opportunities as basic as learning to read and right are far out of their reach.

If these young people are not able to complete an education, that’s half of India that will be unable to perform entire sectors of jobs. An educated population is good for a country—and for the people who were able to attend school.

But why do children withdraw from schools after only a few years? Daughters are expected to help in the kitchen and at home, while sons can go to school. In addition, lack of access and affordability to feminine products mean that girls who make it past the first year or two or schooling drop out once they reach menstruation (at a rate as high as 57%). Blackboards and chalk are still the standard method, and without engaging and comprehensive teaching tools, many students don’t learn as much as they could. This leads to the feeling that their time would be better spent earning some income for their family in poverty, and so they drop out to do labor jobs. And despite the country’s booming growth over the last 15 years, the majority of it has been jobless creation of further wealth for the rich, which never improves the lives of those in the slums who do not have access to that private money.

This is not how Christmas should feel!

Consider offering different gifts to these children, even if they may be a bit more challenging to buy for. The World Bank, which often leads discussions on the anticipated changes or increases in the world’s poor population, estimated that between 40 and 60 million people would fall into poverty in 2020—and this estimation was largely correct. Overall, the world’s low-income population has increased to 690 million, up from 640 million in 2019.

Many of these households operate on no more than $1.90 per person per day, and even then, not all of that money is physically available; rather, the value may be assumed in part from the value of property, which does not put food on the table or provide other critical services such as healthcare. In the wake of global disasters like COVID-19, areas with high levels of poverty are often the hardest hit. Understand why is a different matter.

The lack of access to a reliable or sufficient income means that most individuals are already in ill health for a number of reasons: inadequate access to clean or healthy food or water, no financial or physical ability to see a healthcare provider, and more.

This means that when a pandemic hits this community, there is little or no containment. People who are already less resilient due to an inadequate diet and a lack of basic necessities are almost guaranteed to fall victim to illness, and their inability to stay home—and in so doing fail to acquire necessities like food—quickly turns slums into breeding grounds for any virus or disease.

Many people in better-off countries take for granted their access to benefits such as sick leave that do not exist in the slums. And without disposable cash, families cannot stockpile the food that they need to remain socially distant. This is not their fault, but rather a product of their uncontrolled circumstance.

How Poverty is a Multi-Fold Phenomenon

As poverty continues to rise throughout 2020, one cannot help but examine how the coronavirus had a multifaceted impact on not only the living situations of people globally but also on the manner in which their poverty affects them. This phenomenon spreads across an individual’s entire life, from finances to emotional health, and this is more visible now than ever before.

COVID-19 has highlighted poverty as opportunity deprivation more strongly than any other time in recent history. People become imprisoned by their own low income, unable to create better opportunities for themselves. As unemployment and the face of the workforce changes drastically in response to the pandemic, all opportunities are harder to come by and are being taken more quickly be more advantaged groups.

However, poverty also presents as stigma and discrimination. The us/them issue is highlighted in countries with competing factions over personal protective equipment like masks—some wear them, some don’t. Similarly, the idea that “they” (which typically refers to the poor or the elderly) have a responsibility to protect themselves when such individuals may not have the resources has been growing exponentially.

Poverty has begun to manifest as violence; as some governments elect to keep the economy running at the cost of lives, it is largely the less fortunate who are impacted. Those living on a low income must solve their own problems, and this constitutes a form of structural violence.
