Every person who has seen these images can quickly bring them forward to consciousness. Often, one must promptly dismiss the images to reduce the impact of the suffering may have on the day. It is preferable only to acknowledge the poverty and hope that one can make some active act of charitable donation when convenient. We maintain a shadow outline of the images to avoid excessive emotions of despair and hopelessness. If we dwell on these images, they may produce feelings of guilt, and since we cannot actively do something to help, one begins to resent the appeals for help to sideline the guilt feelings that may well up. Guilt is uncomfortable but results at times from a failure to act. If you have a charitable heart, then compassionate feelings can be overwhelming.

Ignoring them goes against a compassionate nature. Ignoring the prompts of compassion is highly uncomfortable, especially when an adequate response is not possible. We tend to relegate the tragedy of poverty to a passing image or cursory glance. Like the one my confessor unconsciously gave my abdomen while explaining how some forms of gluttony could be less serious than others, momentary intemperance in eating, for instance.

Rather than seeing the images with a clear, sharp lens, we prefer to see the images in vague outlines or a complex, impenetrable maze without seeing the pain. Chesterton states, “There are two ways of dealing with the dignity, the pain, the prejudice or the rooted humour of the poor; especially of the rural poor. One of them is to see in their tragedy only a stark simplicity, like the outline of a rock; the other is to see in it an unfathomable though a savage complexity."

However, we can look back, a little over 100 years ago the Spanish flu entered Calgary by train, coming in with soldiers returning from WW1. The death toll for the Spanish flu was 3300 in Alberta, with majority of deaths coming from First Nation communities1.Compare this to today, April 7th 2021, the death toll of Covid-19 has reached 2002, and an end does not seem clear2. Soon after the Spanish Flu ended, the Great Depression erupted, the fear of another collapse mirroring that of the 1930’s is prevalent. Even 100 years ago, masks were made mandatory, and multiple lockdowns were imposed, oddly we see a similar response today, indicating while other areas of medicine may have grown, our understanding on controlling pandemics remains limited. In this blog I hope to display the impacts pandemics have on the economy and how they effect charitable organizations.

In Priya Danial's case, she might have needed the hardship to be the physiotherapist she became. The ocean is not the ocean without the waves, a rose is not a rose without the many tiny particles moving around, and what is a car if it cannot move at the up and down speed, the crest of summer is not the same without the trough of winter.

As we go through life, we must be aware of the effects we have on each individual ability to reach their full potential.
Back in 2006, Dominican Order asked Dr. Paul to visit Ghana. They needed his help to start a school in a jungle located near the outskirts of the town of Offinso.

Dr. Paul visited with Papal Nuncio and Father Moses, a Dominican priest, who also was personally involved in this project. He was shown the 50 acre land in the vicinity, which was actually purchased by the Dominicans for the project. And, to build that dream, funds were needed.

The friendliness, and ofcourse, the need of the Ghanaian people, convinced Dr. Paul to raise the needed funds for the project. Upon returning to Canada, Dr. Paul committed Dr. Robert Champagne to help him and find some philanthropists to fund the school project.
